Takarada scholars receive grant support

Seven Takarada scholars at MMSU were awarded continued grants today, September 11, during a ceremony at Ferdinand E. Marcos Hall.

The stipend distribution was led by Mr. Kimio Takarada, President of Takara Inc., and Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis, former MMSU President and current CHED Commissioner, reflecting their strong commitment to supporting student success.

Along with Mr. Hideto Daiko, Takarada Inc. consultant, and Hon. Cecilia Araneta-Marcos, Ilocos Norte Vice Governor, MMSU officials distributed grants to four Biology students and three Agriculture students. Each student received a PhP 12,000 allowance per semester (PhP 24,000 annually), along with a PhP 4,000 research fund to cover educational and research expenses.

Kriza Mae Andrea Barandoc, a senior Biology student and scholarship grantee, expressed her gratitude, saying, "I am truly thankful to President Takarada for this scholarship, which was made possible through the initiative of my mentor, Dr. Shirley Agrupis. This opportunity has lifted a tremendous weight off my shoulders, allowing me to fully dedicate myself to my studies without the constant concern of educational expenses."

As part of the scholarship, the students will conduct thesis research related to garlic, aligning with Takarada Inc.’s focus on agricultural innovation.

“Ilocos Norte and Japan share common strengths in garlic production and agricultural development. This scholarship program for MMSU students who have demonstrated academic excellence will be instrumental in helping them succeed in their academic pursuits,” said President Takarada. “We are grateful for the strong partnership with MMSU, and my support remains with all students involved in research. This initiative is our investment in their future.”

Commissioner Agrupis emphasized the broader significance of the scholarship program: “This scholarship not only eases the financial responsibilities of our scholars but also strengthens their ability to fully dedicate themselves to their academic and research goals. We must continue to provide opportunities like this, as they empower students to excel in fields that contribute to national development. Supporting them is an investment in a more innovative, research-driven future for the country.”

The Takarada Scholarship Program began in the 2023-2024 school year, with a partnership focused on black garlic research and innovations.
