Relief drive for typhoon victims on

The \"bayanihan\" spirit lives on.

Students of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) are currently collecting donations for the victims of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng which brought havoc in the National Capital Region and in Northern Luzon provinces the past weeks.

The relief collection drive is a joint effort of the CAS Student Council, the Department of Social Sciences, and the CAS NSTP-CWTS students.

Earlier, the Association of Marketing Management Students (AMMS) based at the College of Business, Economics, and Accountancy, also collected cash, clothes, and food donations which they brought to ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya last Friday, Oct. 9. Mr. Jeffrey T. de Vera, AMMS adviser, says they were able to gather a moderate volume of goods, but acknowledges that much more can be done if other organizations will follow their lead.

Mr. Elreneo R. Castro, speaking on behalf of the CBEA Student Council which he advises, expressed their readiness to cooperate with CAS so that MMSU can have a more unified front in helping the typhoon victims. Ms. Sachi E. Yumul, CASAT SC adviser, sent word that students and employees in the Currimao campus are already gathering relief goods which they will bring to CAS within this week. Other college student councils are expected to throw their support to this undertaking which has the nod of Central Student Council President Ace Joseph R. Rumbaoa.

The organizers will bring the collected items to the Philippine National Red Cross and to ABS-CBN’s Sagip Kapamilya.

Based on data from the National Disaster Coordinating Council, the damage wrought by the two typhoons on farm products, roads, and bridges amount to PhP15.5-B. The figure does not include damages to private property. At least 600 people have died as a result of floods and landslides. Hundreds more are still missing. Thousands of those who survived are cramped in evacuation areas.

Donations may be brought to the relief collection station at the CAS Lobby or at the Department of Social Sciences. Inquiries may be made at 09297793969.
