The Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) and the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) organized a Research Publication Workshop titled, “Enhancing Research Publication Competencies” for MMSU Personnel on January 26, at the MMSU Center for Flexible Learning.

The workshop aims to strengthen academic and research excellence and focus on the importance of research culture for international visibility.

Dr. Analiza Henedina Ramirez, an associate professor from UPLB and a member of the Institute of Weed Science, Entomology and Plant Pathology, discussed the best practices for writing publications. Dr. Ramirez also highlighted the various types of journal articles, writing phases and emphasized the importance of adhering to a specific format in research writing, noting that a research manuscript should be viewed as a compelling story.

On the other hand, Dr. Reniel Pamplona, an associate professor from UPLB and a member of the Institute of Crop Science, provided insights into writing quantitative and qualitative research for publication. He also covered the anatomy of a journal article and various research methods. "If you don't publish your research, science is not communicated well,” he added.

To know more about the systematic approaches in choosing journals for publication, Dr. Jenielyn Padrones, also an associate professor from UPLB, member of the Institute of Renewable Natural Resources, and director of the Office for Institutional Development in Higher Education (OIDHE), shared tips for identifying predatory research journals.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mary Joy Abit, an associate professor from UPLB and a member of the Institute of Weed Science, Entomology, and Plant Pathology, delved into navigating the publication and peer review process. Dr. Abit highlighted the peer review process, types of reviews, editorial assessment, and editor's decision-making process in publishing submitted manuscripts.

MMSU Vice President for Research, Development, and Innovation Dr. Nathaniel R. Alibuyog expressed his gratitude and urged the participants to keep writing. "Through this training, I hope this opens your heart and increases your passion for writing," he said.

Among the participants were faculty members and researchers from MMSU Research, Innovation and Technology Directorate, National Bioenergy Research and Innovation Center (NBERIC), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development (CAFSD), College of Aquatic Sciences and Applied Technology (CASAT), College of Business, Economics and Accountancy (CBEA), College of Computing and Information Sciences (CCIS), College of Industrial Technology (CIT), College of Health Sciences (CHS), College of Engineering (COE), and College of Teacher Education (CTE).

Coordinated by the MMSU Research, Planning, and International Linkages and Partnership Directorates, the workshop is az partnership between MMSU and UPLB formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on January 24, 2024. (MKA_StratCom)
