The long-awaited University Games 2023 at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) has kicked off with the theme "Unflinching," showcasing the Stallions' determination for victory in both sporting and artistic events.
Student-athletes and artists gathered at the university sports complex yesterday, November 6, where each college unveiled unique representations of their moniker for the opening program.
With the addition of two new colleges, the College of Computer and Information Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine, competitors from 13 colleges will vie for the overall champion title. This event will also serve as a qualifying ground for the best Stallion battalions who will go on to compete in the regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) meet.
During the opening ceremony, Janella Ballesteros, a bronze medalist at the National SCUAA was the torchbearer. She relayed the torch to Dr. Prima Fe Franco, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Nathaniel Alibuyog, Vice President for Research, Development, and Innovation, and Dr. Virgilio Julius Manzano, Vice President for Planning and Strategic Foresight who then lighted up the MMSU athletic urn. Staycy Rodrigo, a silver medalist at the National SCUAA, led the oath of amateurism.
University Student Council President Karylle Ann Acosta delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the significance of athletic events, stating, "As we embark on this thrilling journey of competition and friendship, it is crucial to keep in mind the fundamental values of playing sports."
Due to an official business trip, MMSU President Shirley C. Agrupis was represented by Dr. Franco for the declaration of the Unigames. She also issued an inspiring challenge to the athletes and coaches, encouraging them to strive for their best and aim for consecutive titles in the regional SCUAA, saying, "I commend each one of you for your dedication to your respective sports and your commitment to represent our university."
The College of Engineering Maroons, still undefeated, clinched their eighth consecutive overall champion title in the 2022 Unigames, setting the bar high for this year's competition. (HLY/JVBT, StratCom)
