MMSU students bag awards in prov’l accountancy contest

BS Accountancy students of MMSU won five academic and non-academic awards at the close of the competition that marked the celebration of the Provincial Accountancy Week (PAW) held at Hotel Asuncion in Laoag City last September 7.

The MMSU team composed of Queenie Oamil, Bonjovi Gapuz, and Steward Chua landed first place in the quiz bee, while the group of Faye Hilario, Arianne Abella and Edgar Bolo finished third in the same competition. Another team of MMSU students also won first place in the dance craze competition, and second place in the short film contest.

In the individual categories, Annsley Joren G. Miranda prevailed in the essay writing contest, while Dan Wayne Aribuabo and Liezel Cabanatan landed 2nd and 3rd places in extemporaneous speaking, respectively.

During the same event, Mark Joshua Sanchez was also elected as the local president of the Federated Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA).

"The event was a success," said Richard Jay B. Agtang, adviser of JPIA at MMSU, adding that celebrating the event in different activities and contests promoted awareness about the current situation of CPAs and the appropriate actions needed to undertake therein.

"Collaboration, instead of competition, was also developed among the JPIAns," Agtang said.

The event was also participated in by the students of the Divine Word College of Laoag and the Northwestern University.

With the theme "Reinforcing the Future.Together.Today," this year's PAW celebration aimed to "instill the spirit of integrity to the hearts and minds of certified public accountants (CPAs) and JPIAs who are the hope towards building a solid, well-founded, and productive future."

PICPA national president Evelyn Corpuz, also a native of Carasi, Ilocos Norte, stressed the need to reinforce the present and future CPAs in light of the recent survey that accountants would no longer be in-demand due to the Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology which can do some accounting tasks like tax preparation, payrolls, and audit.

"But there is no need to worry about. CPAs armed with integrity will still be our greatest hope towards our goal, a brighter tomorrow in the business world," Corpuz assured.
