Mentor attends research training in Japan

A biology instructor at the MMSU College of Arts and Science participated in a short-term research training in Japan under the Sakura Science Exchange Program administered by the Japan Science and Technology Agency.

The research training of James Paul Madigal in Shizuoka, Japan last November 5-25 was under the supervision of Dr. Hirofumi Hirai, a professor of the Faculty of Agriculture in Shizuoka University (SU). The training grant was also part of the partnership between MMSU and SU on joint international exchanges signed last November 2018.

Madigal, also a researcher of the MMSU's National Bioenergy Research and Innovation Center, thanked the Japanese university and the MMSU administration for the rare opportunity, saying that his technical training in the development of bio-refinery technology is informative and memorable.

"I learned a lot about new scientific ways and technologies which could uplift my professional career and contribute to MMSU's research endeavors," he exclaimed.

During the training, Madigal underwent series of lectures and laboratory activities on fungal genetic transformation, analysis of organic compounds, and transcriptional analysis, among others.

A bio-refinery combines a series of biomass conversion technologies to produce a range of products and base-materials, such as food, feed, chemicals, materials, oil, gas, heat and/or electricity.

Meanwhile, the Sakura Science Exchange Program aims to support the development of talented people overseas who have the potential to contribute to innovation in science and technology.

It also serves as an avenue to strengthen good relationship between Japan and other countries and regions, promote globalization of Japanese education and research institutes.
