International masters conduct seminar on bonsai culture

INTERNATIONAL masters in he propagation bonsai plants came back to MMSU on May 26 to conduct anew a seminar on bonsai culture. This time, the activity was intended for future trainers in this lucrative horticulture business.

It is recalled that Prof. Amy Liang, president of the Bonsai Friendship Federation in Taiwan, gave a similar session during the launching of the MMSU Bonsai School last Jan. 6 which became one of the highlights of MMSU’s 36th foundation anniversary celebration.

Attended by 70 bonsai enthusiasts from Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union, the hands-on seminar, which was held at the University Training Center, was made possible through the collaboration of the Philippine Bonsai Society, Inc. (PBSI), Ilocandia Bonsai Society, Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte, and MMSU.

Mr. Xan Chi Ching, Mr. Tang, and Mr. Budi talked about bonsai art principle and history, the procedure of bonsai making, and developing tropical trees in the Philippines.

Moreover, Dr. Thomas Elias turned-over reading materials for the MMSU Bonsai School and promised to send an annual subscription of a bonsai magazine. He also vowed for a continuing support to the university’s bonsai program.

Furthermore, Ms. Yumie Gupit, PBSI vice president, gave away books to lucky participants who correctly answered questions during the open forum. The books were written by her mother, also a bonsai culture expert.

President Miriam E. Pascua said that seminar will surely help bonsai enthusiasts to propagate and raise aesthetic tiny trees for commercial purposes. Saying the university is lucky to have the international lecturers on bonsai culture, she expressed hope that the participants will be able to establish their own livelihood in the next few years.

She asserted bonsai gardening is a billion dollar industry. This is the reason, she said, many have been stirred to create and develop aesthetic plants from the less attended plants in Ilocos Norte which can be excellent species for bonsai.
