USTP, MMSU assist Ilocos Norte farmers in bamboo products marketing, promotion
By Michael Visaya
The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) in Cagayan de Oro City, in partnership with MMSU, introduced Bamboost, a mobile application designed to enhance the digital marketing capabilities of Ilokano farmers, on June 26 at the Center for Flexible Learning.
A joint project of USTP and the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development, the activity gathered bamboo micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), farmers, and other bamboo enthusiasts in the province of Ilocos Norte, a bamboo-rich province and a beneficiary of the promotional activities of the said project.
The event provided participants a hands-on experience with the Bamboost mobile application and taught them how to use it to market their products and connect farmers, processors, and MSMEs to national and international markets.
Dr. Aris Reynold Cajigal, vice president for academic affairs, who welcomed the USTP delegation, said this initiative is something new and innovative for the bamboo farmers and processors in Ilocos Norte as they struggle to promote their products, especially in large markets.
Also present during the program were project representatives, led by USTP Project Leader Junar Landicho and Co-Project Leader Analiza Diaz. They were joined by MMSU officials, including College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development Dean Charlie Batin, Bamboo Research, Training and Processing Center Chief Bonne Jovi Orteza, and the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte bamboo focal person Hustler Agbayani Garalde.
The partnership between USTP and MMSU is set to expand resource training for bamboo farmers and processors, strengthen collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry, and establish connections with both national and international markets.
MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr. expressed support for USTP in tapping the university for their project. “Let us collaborate in advancing bamboo research, development, and innovation for the benefit of our farmers and the environment,” he said.
