<P><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size=5><STRONG>US-based alumnus lectures on teaching math</STRONG></FONT></P>
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION – A 1975 summa cum laude graduate of the then Northern Luzon Teachers College who is now based in Texas, USA came in this college to lecture on teaching mathematics.
Mr. Rufino C. Tangonan, a faculty member of the John F. Kennedy Learning Center at Dallas Independent School District in Texas, emphasized the principles of active learning and individualized instruction to meet the learning styles and needs of individual learners. Aside from lecturing, he also demonstrated the effective use of manipulatives and calculators in teaching mathematics concepts. After the demonstration, he donated the materials he used to the BSEd-math department.
Lecture participants included some personnel of the Laoag City and Ilocos Norte divisions of the Department of Education, faculty members of CTE, and majors and concentrators of mathematics.
As sequel to the activity, a demonstration teaching on the use of problem solving as a teaching strategy was also conducted by Tangonan at the Regional Science Teaching Center Mathematics Room. This was organized by the fourth year math majors and concentrators in preparation for their practice teaching.
The activities were conducted in consonance with the 12-point agenda of the college to conduct trainings and lectures to ensure quality teacher preparation and upgrade and update faculty on content and pedagogy.
