<font style=\"font-weight: bold;\" size=\"5\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">R&D group sponsors undergrad thesis tilt</span></font>

THE UNIVERSITY Research and Development Directorate on March 31 sponsored the annual search for the best undergraduate thesis held at the University Training Center.

This year, the directorate, during its pre-evaluation of the papers, did not limit finalists for the various contest categories. Twenty-four theses from eight colleges of the  university vied for the awards.

In the arts, education, and social sciences category, the paper entitled \"Ilocos Norte Itnegs’ perspectives on their use and involvement in developing indigenous communication media\" by Hermonoel Soriano, development communication graduate, emerged first place while the papers \"Suitability and usability of houses of physically challenged individuals in Batac City\" by Jade Glenn Asuncion, Marichu Bagaoisan, and Lynzie Grace Yadao (physical therapy) and \"Perceived factors influencing female adolescents’ engagement to premarital sex\" by Valerie Mae Racimo (nursing) settled for the second and third places, respectively.

In the action research category, the theses \"Encouraging mathematical communication through active learning approaches (ALAp)\" by Eldefonso Natividad Jr. Kriztine Catchero, and Madelyn Pascual (secondary education);  \"Enhancing critical thinking skills of students with different learning styles through differentiated instruction\" by Johnver Curameng, Michelle Gamponia, Godeza Orpiada, Eric Polintang , and Joemarie Rara secondary education); and \"Mind mapping and performance of Science III students\" by Rafael Domingo, Monaliza Mandac, and Sherwin Jay Palaspas (secondary education) were chosen first, second, and third places, respectively.

In the agriculture and life sciences category,  the paper \"Preliminary study on the in vitro and in vivo biosorption of heavy metals using the phytomass of selected  brown algal and species in Ilocos Norte\" by Janill Magano (biology) was selected first place; \"The efficacy of two botanical materials in controlling gastrointestinal parasites among different ages of sheep (Ovis aries) by Peter James Icalia (agriculture), second place; and \"Gastroprotective potential of the crude extract of okra (Hibiscus esculentus) fruit in ethanol-enduced ulcerated female swiss mice\" by Kathryn Bumanglag, Kathlyn Grace Calzado, Kathy Kate Libed, and Danica Silhi (pharmacy), third place.

In the mathematics, physical sciences and engineering category, the papers \"Design, fabrication, and evaluation of a charcoal briquetting machine\" by Jeffrey Adap, Marlou Yabis, Christopher Bacena, and Francis Paulino (mechanical engineering) emerged first place; \"Determination of angstrom constants used in estimating solar radiation in the cities of Laoag and Batac\" by Julius Casil (agricultural engineering) second place; and \"Computer-based fire alarm system\" by Michael Scherer Aquino, Richard Bensan, Aldriche Buenavista, Virgilio Carlos, and Winard Gonong (electronics and communications engineering), third place.

The winners in the various categories received certificate of recognition and cash prizes of P1,500, P1,250, and P1,000 for the first, second, and third places, respectively. They also received medals from the Ilocos Norte Science Community.

Meanwhile, three winning papers were selected as MMSU entries of the university to the regional undergraduate thesis competition of the Ilocos Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium in August this year.  These were: \"Preliminary study on the in vitro and in vivo biosorption of heavy metals using the phytomass of selected  brown algal and species in Ilocos Norte\", \"The efficacy of two botanical materials in controlling gastrointestinal parasites among different ages of sheep (Ovis aries), and \"Design, fabrication, and evaluation of a charcoal briquetting machine\".

The winners in this year’s competition were selected by a panel of evaluators who are experts in their respective fields of specialization.  The following composed the group for the agriculture and life sciences, and mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering categories: Dr. Reynaldo Castro of PhilRice-Batac City, Dr. Victoria Cosico and engineer Florendo Calamaan of the Cotton Research Center, Ms. Luzveminda Truong of NTA, and Prof. Elma Santos of MMSU-CTE.  On the other hand, the panel for the arts, education, and social sciences category was composed of Dr. Evangeline Blust, Dr. Marivic Alimbuyuguen, and Dr. Cristina Coloma - all from MMSU.  The evaluators in the action research category were: Dr. Josephine Domingo, Dr. Frederick Rodrigo, and Dr. Cristina Coloma - also from the university.
