FOR THE TYPICAL high school student, summer spells rest and relaxation, but for Alberto Carlos Alejandre, an incoming junior, it is a time for serious stuff.

Alejandre is one of twenty-six students from the Philippine Science High School who spent their summer internship here in MMSU from April 15 to 30.

The annual internship program aims to enable the students to participate in researches of scientists in public and private institutions; to develop scientific research laboratory skills in the students; and to foster interactions between scientists and scholars. MMSU is one of the few institutions chosen by PSHS to host the student interns.

The topics discussed and the corresponding speakers were as follows: agrometeorological station and climate data analysis—Ms. Evangeline S. Galacgac; biotechnology and tissue culture laboratory—Prof. Ma. Luisa S. Gabriel, Ms. Menisa A. Antonio, and Ms. Araceli J. Badar; data processing and presentation—Ms. Corazon Diana A. Pastor; microbiology techniques including biofuel production—Dr. Prima Fe R. Franco; application and techniques for lignocellulosics—Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis and Dr. Roque A. Ulep; and biological techniques—Prof. Henedine A. Aguinaldo.

Dr. Nathaniel Alibuyog, director for research, briefed the students about the university and its research and development activities.
