A BUDDING researcher defeated seasoned investigators from various state colleges and universities in Region I when he captured the first place in the research category of the Regional Fisheries R&D Review held April 10-11 at the Long Beach Resort Hotel in Paringao, Bauang, La Union.
Janill I. Magano, a recent magna cum laude graduate of B.S. Biology, impressed evaluators when he eloquently presented in the said gathering results of his undergraduate thesis entitled \"In vitro and in vivo biosorption on heavy metals using phytomass of selected brown algal species in Ilocos Norte\".
The R&D review is an annual activity of the Regional Fisheries Research and Development Center of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources which is highlighted by the presentation of completed R&D papers including undergraduate dissertations or theses.
Magano’s paper was the only one from MMSU that was presented among three that were qualified for presentation. The paper was co-authored by Dr. Shirley Agrupis, professors Roque Ulep and Henedine Aguinaldo, and Dr. Epifania Agustin.
The papers entitled \"Acceptability of gracilaria chips\" by Aurora Afalla et al, and \"Performance of developed brackishwater strain of tilapia (BEST) in polyculture and monoculture in brackishwater ponds\" by Elizabeth Urmaza, et al, settled for the second and third places, respectively. Both were from the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in La Union.
Magano received P3,000 and a certificate of recognition for his feat. Earlier, he topped the agriculture and life sciences category in MMSU’s search for the best undergraduate thesis. As such, he will also represent the university in the regional competition sponsored by the Ilocos Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium in August this year.
