By Daniel P. Tapaoan, Jr.
A private career college in Toronto, Canada and Mariano Marcos State University are bent to pursue education exchanges this year.
The Evergreen College (EC), which offers a wide range of diploma and certification programs, commits to collaborate with MMSU as reflected in a memorandum of understanding signed by MMSU President Shirley C. Agrupis and EC Vice President Alan Lu at the Islas Filipino Restaurant in Toronto on April 2.
MMSU and EC agreed to develop international programs, pursue joint research activities, and jointly conduct academic internship, immersion programs, academic symposia, workshops, conferences, and meetings. The two schools will also share best and innovative practices in teaching and curriculum design.
PSCA thanked the Canadian university for its trust and confidence to MMSU, hoping the partnership would open for more focused and meaningful collaborations in the future.
“With the newest partnership that we forged, we are headed at more productive and innovative years, especially in the fields of healthcare, business, community support, technology, and hospitality,” she said, expressing excitement at the prospect of the two universities sharing the best of what they can explore together.
For his part, EC Vice President Lu said the college shall work hard to satisfy the requisites and contents of the shared agreement. “We are proud to partner with MMSU, an institution known for its achievements and commitment to excellence,” he said.
EC is now the fourth Canadian partner-university of MMSU. The university tied up with Coast Mountain College in 2019, and the University of Saskatchewan and Dalhousie University in 2021 to promote academic and research exchanges.
PSCA traveled to Canada on a business trip with Commission on Higher Education officials and key personnel of other Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs) on March 27 to April 3 to explore partnerships with schools and other organizations. CHED Chairperson Prospero De Vera led the group.
MMSU was one of the eight HEIs that composed the delegation. Other tertiary schools are the Iloilo Science and Technology University, Southern Leyte State University, Tarlac Agricultural University, Universidad de Dagupan, West Visayas State University, and World Citi Colleges. They all partnered with the Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan).
CICan Vice President for International Partnerships Alain Roy and the eight HEI presidents signed on March 29 a letter of intent for academic cooperation in Canada.
In the covenant, the universities agreed to collaborate on developing micro-credentials, applied research, student mobility programs, prior learning assessment tool, and the inclusion of in-demand skills in the curriculum.
CICan is an association founded in 1972 to serve as the national and international voice of Canada’s largest post-secondary education network. (HLY/JVBT, StratCom)
