Mariano Marcos State University’s contributions to sustainable energy development earned it recognition as the only Philippine higher education institution to receive special recognition at the Sustainable Energy Awards 2024 from the Department of Energy (DOE). The awarding ceremony was held at the Makati Diamond Residences on December 12.
DOE Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla emphasized that showcasing the achievements of various institutions aims to inspire greater support for sustainability, encourage innovation, and accelerate the country’s shift to cleaner, greener energy.
Vice President for Resource Generation and Management Bjorn Santos accepted the award on behalf of MMSU OIC-President Prima Fe R. Franco. Dr. Santos described the recognition as a milestone not only for MMSU but also for the country’s renewable energy efforts. He shared that the award makes MMSU even more committed to promoting renewable energy technologies and contributing to the nation’s sustainable energy goals.
MMSU’s partnership with the DOE dates back to the 1980s with the establishment of the Affiliated Renewable Energy Center (AREC). Over the years, MMSU has led several renewable energy initiatives, including bioethanol research and capacity-building programs to help local government units (LGUs) adopt sustainable energy practices. It is also home to the National Bioenergy Research and Innovation Center (NBERIC).
Vice President for Research, Development, and Innovation Nathaniel Alibuyog expressed his gratitude to the DOE, underscoring the importance of their partnership in advancing renewable energy efforts in Northern Luzon and beyond. He reaffirmed MMSU’s commitment to collaborating on projects that drive renewable energy initiatives.
Alongside MMSU, several like-minded organizations were recognized for their contributions to a clean and sustainable energy future. Awardees included the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC), GIZ GmbH, the European Union’s Access to Sustainable Energy Program, UNDP’s DREAMS project, the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership, Sabang Renewable Energy Corporation, the Pineapple Fiber Processing Facility in Negros Occidental, and USAID Philippines. These organizations share the same dedication to advancing a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy future for the Philippines and beyond
The new recognition strengthens the role of MMSU in helping Northern Philippines move toward cleaner, more sustainable energy.
