MMSU-CAFSD prof completes dairy production course in New Zealand

By Daniel P. Tapaoan, Jr., STRATCOM Correspondent

An assistant professor of the MMSU College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) has completed the Advanced Short Course on Sustainable Dairy Production System hosted by the Massey University (MU) in New Zealand on December 1-15.

Dr. Sean Vidad, chairperson of the CAFSD Department of Agricultural Sciences, was among the 26 participants from selected higher education institutions in the country with existing Philippine Carabao Center (PCC).

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) sponsored his participation to the short-term program through the Higher Education Upskilling and Study for Advancement of Staff and Faculty (HUSAY) program. The University of the Philippines Los Baños - Institute of Animal Science and MMSU facilitated his endorsement to the scholarship program.

Dr. Vidad said the program focused on enhancing dairy production expertise in the Philippines using comparisons as a learning strategy, exploring how different management systems impact dairy production. The course included lectures, hands-on activities, field visits, and discussions on curriculum development.

He thanked CHED, the host institution, and the two endorsing universities for the learning opportunity. He hopes his participation will pave the way for strengthening the dairy science curriculum at CAFSD and fostering formal institutional linkages with the dairy science consortia and MU for continuous research and upskilling efforts.

With his exposure to the international program, he bared plans to integrate dairy science as another specialization of the BS Agriculture major in Animal Science program in MMSU, package a project proposal to establish an instructional dairy production facility in the university, and forge a research collaboration.
