MMSU awards 22 distinguished alumni

A graduate of MMSU Laboratory High School in Laoag, Dr. Modesty M. Leaño is Ilocos Norte’s foremost pathologist. As head of the Pathology Department of the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical center, she played a key role in the Covid-19 response of the province, particularly in efficient and accurate testing. She has also co-authored studies on cancer diagnosis which have been published in international journals.
 
On January 26, three decades after she finished high school in MMSU, Dr. Leaño is back on campus. She marched with pride at the MMSU Ferdinand E. Marcos Park to receive a recognition from the university for her contributions to the medical sector. She is one of the 22 Distinguished Alumni of the university in this year’s Pammigbig ken Pammadayaw.
 
An awarding ceremony held tonight cited 21 other distinguished alumni. These include Mayor Rommel T. Labasan of the municipality of Pinili, a BS Sociology graduate in 2009, known for his leadership and dedication to good governance, and Dr. Virginia Alejandro-Duldulao, a graduate of the predecessor school of MMSU, the Ilocos Norte Normal School, whose legacy continues to benefit hundreds of tobacco farmers across the country through her Mannalon iti Tobacco program.
 
Also in the roster of awardees are Dr. Carmelo James Esteban, former MMSU vice president for research, extension, and business; Dr. Artemio B. Alcoy, former dean of CAFSD; Dr. Joel B. Lopez, schools division superintendent of the city schools division of Batac; Dr. Reynaldo D. Agcaoili, Professional Regulation Commission Region IV-B regional director; Ret. Gen. Bernabe P. Sagsagat, former regional director of PNP Internal Affairs Service in Region IV; Dr. Ronald O. Ocampo, vice president for academic, research, and extension in Apayao State College; Dr. Narcitas B. Quano, graduate school professor at Cagayan State University-Sanchez Mira campus; and Atty. Lolibeth R. Medrano, recipient of 2020 Presidential Gawad Career Executive Service award.
 
They were also joined by Ms. Nina F. Corpuz-Rodriguez, owner and founder of Nina Inabel; Dr. Lawrence V. Madriaga, campus director of Philippine Science High School; Ms. Abelita L. Villanueva, founder and CEO of AGA Group of Companies in Canada; Prof. Zaldy A. Fernandez, proponent of the “Shared Facility Program”; Ms. Leylani L. Juliano, chief science research specialist at Philrice; Mr. Rogelio Yapo Jr., owner of North Stellar Resort and Hotel; Ms. Armi Oliver Harper, realtor associate in Hawaii; Engr. Khyle Glainmer M. Quiton, professor at MAPUA University; Engr. Dennis A. Alejandro, assistant vice president at Makati Development Corporation; Mr. John Louise D. Raval, chief pharmacist at Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu; and Mr. Randolf C. Padayao, quality assurance specialist at UNILAB, Inc.
The selection of this year’s awardees was a rigorous process, led by the organizing offices: the MMSU Federated Alumni Association Inc., Alumni Relations Office, and Planning and Development Office.
 
MMSU President Shirley C. Agrupis said “Our distinguished alumni are indeed a proof of the long standing culture of excellence and selfless service in MMSU. We want to build a word-class university because we have alumni like you who are world-class.”
 
FAAI President Gwyneth S. Quidang also expressed her hope for sustained partnership with the university, "The future is bright for MMSU. May such partnership between the alumni and the administration be sustained not only now but for the many years to come."
 
The grand event was joined by university alumni and other university officials.
 
The Pammigbig ken Pammadayaw activity is a part of the 45th Foundation Anniversary celebration of the university. It aims to cascade inspiration to the MMSU community, both alumni and students who will soon wave the ‘green and gold’ outside the portals of the university. (HLY/JVBT, StratCom)
