By Kathrina Antonio
Rekindling Ilokano unity or ‘timpuyog,’ the Normalites of Hawaii, Inc. (NOH) celebrated its 6th Grand Alumni Reunion and Coronation Night on July 20 at Ala Moana Hotel, Honolulu.
The celebration started with a grand march of alumni from MMSU predecessor schools, which include Laoag Normal School, Ilocos Norte Normal School, Northern Luzon Teacher College, Northern Luzon State College, MMSU College Education, and the present MMSU College of Teacher Education. It was followed by the entrance of colors led by the Order of the Knights of Rizal Hawaii Chapter, an invocation by Ms. Andrea Aguada (Class ‘69), and dance prayer by NOH Class ‘69 Dance Troupe.
Ms. Florence Peralta (Class ‘68), event chair, highlighted the organization's journey and its impact on the members’ lives. She shared that the reunion is “more than just a gathering; it’s a celebration of the friendships and memories that have stood the test of time.”
Meanwhile, Hon. John Mizuno, director of Statewide Homeless and Housing, praised the organization’s commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and solidarity among its members, drawing parallels to the support needed by the community.
Mr. Arlene John Peralta, NOH president, provided an overview of Dr. Agrupis' impressive career and contributions, highlighting her dedication to academics and relentless advocacies for the community.
In her message as guest of honor and speaker, MMSU President Shirley C. Agrupis expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome and opportunity to reconnect with former colleagues and students. “Our coming together is a manifestation of upholding one particular Ilokano value called timpuyog despite the distance and time. The word suggests the need for panagkikinnaawatan or mutual understanding and maymaysa a sirmata or shared vision for the organization,” she said.
Dr. Agrupis also acknowledged various notable undertakings and projects of the organization for the past 13 years. “The Normalites of Hawaii exemplify the true spirit of community and togetherness. Your dedication to maintaining these bonds is truly ins
piring,” she stated.
NOH also recognized distinguished alumni for their outstanding achievements and contributions. The awardees include Mr. Arlene John Peralta (NOH president), Ms. Ligaya Ricafrente (Class ‘68 and current NOH adviser), Ms. Florence Peralta (Class ‘68), and Mr. Rafael “Maestro Pike” Velasco (Class ‘84 and current NOH vice president). Hon. Gwyneth Quidang, president of the MMSU Federated Alumni Association Inc., presented the awards.
Also present at the event were Consul Emilio Fernandez; State Representative May Mizuno; Dr. Arnold Villafuerte, supreme archivist and overseas representative; Knights of Rizal International Headquarters Supreme Council; and other NOH officers, alumni, and guests.
