Manang Can-iko: MMSU-GAD, CIT hold basic car maintenance training for women employees

Mariano Marcos State University–Gender and Development Focal Point System (GFPS), in collaboration with the College of Industrial Technology (CIT) GAD Unit, conducted a basic car maintenance training for women employees from June 26 to 27.

Held at CIT, the training was titled 'Manang Can-iko: Skills Training on Basic Car Maintenance for MMSU Women Employees.' It is aligned with the university’s GAD advocacy for women’s empowerment, safety, and the dismantling of gender stereotypes, particularly in technical fields such as automotive care.

The two-day training featured interactive lectures and practical demonstrations designed to equip women employees with essential car maintenance skills. The program was built around three core modules with CIT faculty members serving as speakers.

During the first module, Dr. Jayson Tebes spoke about “Handling Emergencies and Breakdowns,” where he trained participants on how to safely manage sudden car problems using emergency tools and safety protocols.

Mr. Ruel Peralta discussed a systematic approach to preventive maintenance using the basic road safety checklist: Battery, Lights, Oil, Water, Brakes, Air, Gas, Engine, Tires, and Self, also known as B.L.O.W.B.A.G.E.T.S.
The final session was led by Mr. Larmy Gensis Ubasa, who covered “FLAT Tire Fix: Fearless Ladies Acting Together,” empowering participants with the skills and confidence to change a flat tire and promoting teamwork when dealing with vehicle issues.

The training also included a hands-on workshop where participants applied their newly acquired knowledge through actual car inspections, breakdown simulations, and tire-changing exercises. This practical component ensured that learning went beyond theory, boosting the women’s confidence and competence in real-world situations.

MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr. expressed appreciation to the GFPS and CIT for leading the training. He highlighted that the activity not only reinforces the university’s GAD commitments but also promotes its goal of holistic employee development.

“By equipping women with practical, everyday skills traditionally dominated by men, the university continues to build a more inclusive, self-reliant, and empowered campus community,” he said.
