The University Intellectual Property Office (UIPO) initiated a seminar-cum-writeshop on IP Management, Valuation and Licensing on April 27 and 28 at the University Training Center.

The main resource speaker was Engr. Luwin de la Concha of IP Philippines, the lead agency in the country mandated to implement state policies on intellectual property. De la Concha reminded the participants of the importance of protecting their technologies and other creative outputs before commercializing them. He discussed the salient points of the IP code of the Philippines and its implementing guidelines.

The two-day undertaking was capped with an evaluation of MMSU-developed technologies for 2008. In the closing program, President Miriam E. Pascua stressed the importance of developing an IP culture in MMSU. \"IP education is a must especially in these times when counterfeit products abound,\" she remarked.

For her part, Dr. Gliceria Pascua, UIPO chief, said the seminar-writeshop was a good opportunity to update the knowledge of the participants regarding their intellectual property rights and how to manage them in accordance with the existing IP rights policy of the university. She stressed the imperative of disclosing technologies developed by MMSU employees and students.

Following the creation of the UIPO in December 2007, the university IP policy took effect in March 2008.
