TO ADVOCATE nature conservation at the same time promote science and technology, the Ilocos Norte Science Community and the Philippine Society for the Study of Nature conducted a three-day Biodiversity and Science Camp among selected high school students from S&T-performing high schools in Ilocos Norte, Oct. 26-28.

The camp was designed to enhance the participants’ knowledge on biodiversity and how to conserve such through science and technology.  It was done to promote awareness and appreciation of the importance of mountains and rainforests, their flora and fauna, and the ecological processes occurring in these.  It further aimed to train the students as future environmental leaders who would help conserve the environment and promote S&T in the locality.

The nature study and science camp was done through lectures, discussions, and workshops on exploring beyond the study of nature, the biology of the Philippine forest, the social aspect of the study of nature, forest destruction, field aid measures, jungle survival, commitment building, and robotics.  Lecturers came from the UP Open University, from the Institute of Biological Science of UPLB, from Pampanga Agricultural College, from De La Salle University-Manila, and from MMSU.

A nature walk to the Pasuquin Forest Reserve at Luttuong Falls was also conducted to optimize the participants’ learning and appreciation of the lectures.

The students pitched their tents, cooked their meals, and learned survival strategies in the forest. They were also taught to assemble simple miniatures of robots.

Activities were done at the College of Aquatic Sciences and Applied Technology in Currimao and at the Pasuquin Forest Reserve. A total of 71 third year high school and college science majors participated in the said camp.

The Ilocos Norte Science Community is a network of 15 member-agencies in Ilocos Norte that promotes S&T.  It is headed by Dr. Virgilio Julius P. Manzano Jr. who is also the current national president of the Philippine Society for the Study of Nature.
