Green wall project launched
The MMSU launches today the green wall (GW) project in order to bring back to life the arid areas surrounding the MMSU campus and to have a massive mini forest and orchard which will help sustain the university’s income-generating projects.
The Green Wall is established along the 4.5-kilometer stretch, that begins from the boundary of MMSU and the hilly portion of the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) staff housing project at Brgy. Tabug, that goes through the peripheral road close to the Quiaoit River (QR) at Brgy. Quiling Sur, and ends at a portion of QR in Brgy. Bacucang.
Aside from these areas, two other separate areas will be added as components of the wall. These are located along the MMSU and Batac City proposed roads inside the campus, which have lengths of 1.5 km and 800 meters, respectively.
This massive tree wall, according to Engr. Marlon Agloco of the Physical Plant and General Services Division (PPGSD), is composed of three layers of fruit-bearing trees and other tree species that will be planted close to the vicinity of the university fences. The distances of the trees depend on the requirements for their species.
A tree wall is a wall that is partially or completely covered with species of trees planted in organic growing media, such as soil or any organic substrate materials. The areas can also have an established integrated water delivery system that will meet the requirements for a living orchard or forest.
The benefits of TW are from the plants themselves, which naturally absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants, and then exhale fresh and clean oxygen. It also helps dampen noise and provides benefits to people and other animals such as birds.
The project is one of the initiatives aimed at achieving a vibrant and nurturing environment in the campus as part of the President’s 7-point agenda --(R.E.Andres) .
