Joseph Calamaan Ramos, Sirmata illustrator and a fourth year BS in Industial Education student captured the grand prize in the \"Ani ng Tagumpay: Festival of Philippine Communities 2009,\" a national on-the-spot poster making contest held at SM Megamall Megatrade Hall, Mandaluyong City, June 5.
Showcasing agricultural products and traditional industries of Region I in mixed media (acrylic and pastel), his work, lauded by art critics, was likewise adjudged \"People’s Choice\".
Sponsored by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), the contest revolved around the government agency’s advocacy to promote awareness on the importance and benefits of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) to rural development.
Ramos, who represented Region I, bested eight other regional representatives. Coming from a farming family in Brgy. Pila, Laoag City, he said the inspiration for his work was not difficult to come by, his father being an agrarian reform beneficiary.
He received a Php20,000 cash prize and two ornately sculpted wood trophies. In recognition of his twin victory, he will also receive a Php4,000 cash incentive from the university. He says he intends to spend his winnings to buy a laptop so he can draw and draft digitally.
Rommel Aquino, provincial coordinator of DAR-Ilocos Norte, invited Ramos to represent Region I when he learned that Calamaan won second place in comic strip drawing during the national press conference held in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan last February.
Ramos also won the National Youth Commission’s Guhit Kabataan contest in 2005. He was then a high school student at the Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades.
