3 MMSU-CAFSD students join Japan exchange program
By Daniel Tapaoan, Jr.
Three senior environmental science students of the MMSU College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) participated in the 2025 Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) ASEAN-Japan Students Conference.
Maria Felicel Grace Rahon, Carl Joshua Libertino, and Micaella Tolentino were among the nine Philippine delegates in the exchange visit held from January 14 to 21 in Japan. Other exchange students come from the University of the Philippines, Ateneo De Manila University, and the University of Santo Tomas.
Participating in the “Climate Change and Energy” group, the environmental science students engaged in climate change policy sessions, various cultural activities, site visits, and workshops that focused on topics fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture and society.
Dr. Arlene Gonzales, MMSU’s chief for international programs, said the students’ participation in the JENESYS program will also benefit the university by enhancing its reputation and fostering global perspectives.
“With their exposure in the exchange visit, our students are expected to share knowledge on climate change and energy, and lead sustainability initiatives in their communities,” Gonzales added.
The JENESYS ASEAN-Japan Students Conference, sponsored by the Japanese government, aims to strengthen friendship and diplomatic relations between the youth of Japan and Southeast Asia. This year, nearly 100 participants were selected for the program, which focuses on maritime security and the rule of law, energy and climate change, and education and cultural preservation.
