3 colleges launch bicycle-sharing programs
IN SUPPORT to the university’s green agenda and in recognizing other benefits, student councils of CAS, CBEA, and CASAT, launched their bicycle sharing programs in collaboration with Ilocos Norte First District Provincial Board Member Kristian Michel R. Ablan.
With CAS and CBEA initiating the ‘Ride-a-Bike’ campaign in the last quarter of 2009, CASAT is the latest college to promote bicycling which is drawing praise and attention as an economical, environment-friendly, and healthy means of transportation. The bicycling program was launched at the Currimao campus in a program held Jan. 27.
Ablan funded the purchase of five bicycle units for each college upon the request of their respective student councils. He also donated bicycle paraphernalia to the three colleges, and a bicycle parking rack at CAS.
\"Our vision is to turn MMSU into a biking community,\" said Ablan, himself an active cyclist. He stressed the importance of riding the bicycle to help avert the problems brought about by smoke emissions.
The launch of the bicycle sharing program in each of the three colleges was highlighted by ceremonial bicycle tours around the campus participated by the colleges’ respective deans, faculty members, student leaders, and other biking enthusiasts.
In her 2010 State-of-the-University Address on Jan. 6, President Miriam E. Pascua, expressed appreciation and support to the bicycle-sharing program. \"We will work on ways to make bicycling safe and convenient for our constituents,\" Dr. Pascua said.
