TWO RESEARCH and development papers on fisheries garnered top awards in the 12th Annual Zonal Commodity R&D Review and Planning Workshop for Fisheries-cum-Techno Road Show held Nov. 21-23 at Cagayan State University in  Aparri.

The paper entitled “Edible seaweeds of Ilocos Norte:  Food preparation, other local use, and market potentials” by Dr. Zenaida Agngarayngay, Ana Fe Llaguno, Susan Aquino, Lorcelie Taclan, and Evangeline Galacgac of the Research Unit, placed first in the best development paper category.  For this, the authors received a monetary incentive of PhP 5,000 and a certificate of recognition.

On the other hand, the paper “Spatio-temporal variations in density and size frequency distribution of the sea urchin in three sites of Ilocos Norte” presented by Helen Grace Bangi of CASAT was adjudged third place in the best research paper category for which she received a certificate of recognition.

The paper on edible seaweeds in Ilocos Norte will vie for the Best Development Paper Award, national level, in January 2008 in time for the Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development (PCAMRD) anniversary celebration.

The commodity review for fisheries is an annual activity of the Northern Luzon Aquatic and Marine R&D Zonal Center under the umbrella of PCAMRD.  It is conducted to bring together groups of individuals from 21 research agencies working on fisheries R&D to gather and assess information and technologies generated as well as to discuss other issues and problems concerning fisheries R&D.  This year’s celebration was inspired by the theme “Poverty alleviation and employment opportunity through fishery R&D”.
