PAEF presents 2011-2012 Fulbright, other program offerings

DR. ESMERALDA S. Cunanan, executive director of the Philippine-American Educational Foundation (PAEF), and Ms. Eileen Consuelo D. Valdecañas, program officer/educational advising coordinator of PAEF, visited the university, Feb. 2, to present the 2011-2012 offerings of the Fulbright Program, the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships, and the East-West Center Scholarships, and to give tips on how to strengthen application for these various programs.

“We believe there is so much talent at MMSU and you are very fortunate to have the support of your administration,” Cunanan told students, faculty members, staff, and members of the Administrative Council in a program held at the Main Library.

In her message, President Pascua expressed her gratitude to the PAEF officials for “helping us achieve our goal for academic excellence and upgrading the capability of our human resources”.

Valdecañas oriented those present in the program on the nature, fields of study, eligibility requirements, required documents, and benefits offered by the Fulbright Graduate Student Program, Fulbright Advanced Research and University Lecturing (Senior) Award, Foreign Language Teaching Assistants Program, Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships, and the East-West Center Scholarships.

Mr. Aris Cajigal of CTE is currently pursuing his doctor’s studies in science education at the University of Georgia under the Fulbright Graduate Student Program and is expected to graduate in September this year.

Mr. Rommel M. Dascil, CAS social science instructor was, likewise, chosen recipient of the same Fulbright program and is now at the Clark University Graduate School in Worcester, Massachusetts, to pursue his Master of Arts in International Development and Social Change. He is expected to graduate in 2011.

Jerome Y. Agpaoa is also currently enrolled at Illinois State University after being awarded a Global Undergraduate Exchange Program for one academic year that started in November 2009. The Global UGrad is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the united States Department of State that provide scholarship to outstanding college students from underrepresented sectors in society.

The Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries including the Philippines.

MMSU is the only state university in the country which is home to one of PAEF’s EducationUSA’s seven satellite advising centers in the Philippines.

PAEF is a binational organization responsible for the administration of the Fulbright exhanges between the Philippines and the United States, the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships, and the East-West Center Scholarships. It also serves as a clearing house for information on educational institutions and programs in the Philippines and in the United States.
