OIC bares plan to offer BS Food Science
The University is planning to offer a BS in Food Science (BSFS) program in support of the Food Innovation Center (FIC) which was launched on Sept. 2.
The plan was revealed by Dr. Prima Fe R. Franco, MMSU officer-in-charge, in her speech at the close of the FIC inauguration.
BSFS deals with the scientific preparation, processing and distribution of foods. It is also concerned with the improvement of food products’ flavor, appearance, storage qualities as well as in the control of quality changes during processing, marketing and distribution.
The program is designed to provide students with knowledge in the foundations of food technology associated with raw food materials and production management as well as food science. Students are also taught on how to create food products, ingredients and processing equipment.
“(As we) strengthen the research, development and extension (RDE) programs of MMSU to intensify research and innovations and to develop technologies to reach the grassroots, we will also strengthen the human capital by offering BS in Food Sciences to hone more food innovators,” she said.
Dr. Franco pledged her commitment to the mandate of the DOST in establishing the FIC in order to sustain its effectiveness.
“With these equipment in our FIC, we can level up our S&T food products to become at par with those produced in the country and in our ASEAN neighbors,” she said.
