More scientists visit MMSU
Scientists from American universities recently shared their expertise to MMSU faculty members, researchers, and students. Four of them served as visiting scientists while three were grantees of the Balik Scientist Program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Another one was a visiting Fulbright visiting scholar. They delivered lectures, conducted trainings and workshops, and collaborated with MMSU experts on programs along their respective fields of specialization.
The visiting professors were: Dr. Praveen V. Vadlani and Dr. Ronaldo G. Maghirang, professors of Kansas State University’s (K-State) Department of Grain Science and Industry and Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, respectively; Dr. Sergio C. Capareda, assistant professor, Dwight Look College of Engineering, Texas A&M University; and Dr. Ricolindo Cariño, assistant research professor of the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems of the Mississipi State University.
Dr. Fiorello B. Abenes, professor emeritus of the California Polytechnic State University in Pomona, California, was also here as a DOST Balik Scientists together with Dr. Guillermo A. Mendoza, associate professor of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, University of Illinois in Urbana; and Dr. Marilyn C. Baguinon, associate professor, Biology Department, Kutztown University in Pennsylvania and a former MMSU faculty member. Dr. Paul Daniel Kohnen, associate professor in biology of the Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, also came to MMSU as a visiting Fulbright scholar.
The expertise of the scientists complemented each other and focused on programs on bioenergy, renewable energy, and climate change geared towards making MMSU energy self- sufficient.
Dr. Vadlani and Dr. Maghirang, during their stay at MMSU on June 15-16, signed a memorandum of understanding with President Miriam E. Pascua for a stronger ollaboration between th two univewrsities. Dr. Vadlani discussed “Bio-conversion and bio-processing for value added chemicals†in a special lecture-forum with the Administrative Council and the CAS faculty members and students. The coming of Dr. Vadlani was part of the International Borlaug Fellowship Program of Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis, former director of the Office for Extenal Affairs and Partnership (OEAP). Her professor, Dr. Vadlani, is tasked to visit the fellow in her home institution. Dr. Maghirang, on the other hand, gave an overview of pollution to researchers and faculty members and students of the CAFSD Environmental Science Department. Similarly, Dr. Capareda discussed “Bio-energy Program: Today and the Futureâ€.
In another event on July 8-9, Dr. Cariño delivered a lecture on “Simulation Approach to Enrolment Planning†to faculty members of the CAS Department of Computer Science, staff of the Registrar’s Office and Information Technology and Training Center, and senior students of computer science. He, likewise, gave ideas for the re-engineering of the MMSU enrolment system.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mendoza’s stint as Balik Scientist from July 6-August 15 was spent for the program dubbed “Regional Geo-spatial summit: Strengthening Institutional Capacities on Geo-spatial Technologies and Information Systems for Climate Change. The program focused on a training workshop on GIS using commercial softwares and open-source softwares. He also collaborated on the study, “Development and Application of a Web-based Integrated Climate Change Information Systems in Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resourcesâ€. Dr. Mendoza first came to MMSU as visiting professor in 2009.
Like in the case of Dr. Mendoza, it was also the second coming – in fact, the “homecoming†– of Dr. Baguinon to the university as she was at MMSU again just last year. One of her activities as DOST Balik Scientist was to strengthen institutional capacities in conducting molecular and biotech R&D activities. She trained faculty members and researchers on basic molecular biology technique on July 27-30. No less than MMSU President ME Pascua along with Dr. Leonardo T. Pascua of the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Unit (DA-RFU) and four others from the University of Northern Philippines, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Isabela State University, and DA-RFU attended the training workshop.
Moreover, Dr. Kohnen is here at MMSU for six months beginning June 15. Part of his Fulbright scholarship is the conduct of lectures and hands-on training on biotechnology, specifically on virus indexing to members of the MMSU host team. He also holds classes this semester at the Graduate School.
The coming of scientists in the university is part of the programs of OEAP to strengthen MMSU’s international linkages. According to Dr. Nathaniel R. Alibuyog, acting OEAP director, the coming back of these scientists who were here last year under the DOST Balik Scientist Program is part of their follow-up activities on the collaborative programs they have started.
