By Jhoanna Faye Jacinto, STRATCOM Correspondent
The Mariano Marcos State University–College of Aquatic Sciences and Applied Technology (MMSU-CASAT) received a Commendation Award from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Regional Field Office I (BFAR-RFO1) for its vital role in responding to cetacean strandings along the coastlines of the Ilocos Region.
The recognition was conferred during the Culmination Program of the 62nd Fish Conservation Week Celebration held on September 29, 2025, at Ynad’s Place, San Juan, La Union. The award signifies MMSU’s sustained commitment to marine wildlife conservation and coastal ecosystem protection through the college.
MMSU-CASAT was acknowledged alongside other institutions, local government units, and individuals whose coordinated and timely actions have significantly contributed to the rescue, rehabilitation, and data collection efforts involving stranded marine mammals.
Among the individual awardees was Mr. Ramil Llanes, CASAT instructor and known environmental advocate, whose fieldwork and community engagement have been instrumental in cetacean response operations.
Prof. Pilar Carolyn V. Pascual, OIC-Dean, attributed the award to the dedication of the college to marine biodiversity and the sustainable stewardship of aquatic resources. “Our faculty, students, and partners continue to work hand-in-hand to protect vulnerable marine species and promote science-based conservation practices,” she said.
The award reinforces MMSU-CASAT’s role as a leading aquatic sciences institution in the region, with its active involvement in environmental response, fisheries education, and community-based conservation initiatives. The college’s collaboration with the Municipal Agriculture Office of Currimao and the Environment and Fisheries Sections of the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte has enabled swift and effective action during marine mammal emergencies.
CASAT also marked another feat as BS Fisheries students Christine Jin Mi M. Aguirre and Glorianne R. Malacas won first and third places in the Fish Conservation Week Poster Making Contest themed “Pangisdaang Masagana, Sapat na Isda sa Bawat Pamilya,” with mentor Mr. Gemar Malapira recognized for his guidance.
