CBEA student bags US exchange grant

MR. JAN Lord V. Lumabao, a BS Accountancy student, was selected 2010-2011 Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global Ugrad) grantee for one academic year. The news was relayed to MMSU by Dr. Esmeralda S. Cunanan, executive director of the Philippine-American educational Foundation, which administers the grant.

A program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, Global UGrad provides scholarships to outstanding college students from non-elite, underrepresented sectors in society. It is administered in the country by the Philippine-American Educational Foundation.

Global Ugrad aims to provide a large and diverse group of student leaders with in-depth exposure to US society, culture, and academic institutions by engaging in substantive academic exchanges at colleges and universities in the US.

Scholars will be enrolled full-time in undergraduate course work chosen from the US host institution’s existing curriculum to allow for ample opportunity for on-going interaction with US faculty and student peers, and for exposure to US academic and classroom culture.

Lumabao attended a pre-departure orientation at the PAEF office in Makati, May 13-14.

This is the second consecutive year that a student of MMSU was chosen for the said program. Last year, Jerome Y. Agpaoa, a computer science student, went to Illinois State University. He arrived last summer and is now back at CAS.

Lumabao hails from Brgy. Sulquiano, Dingras, where he goes home everyday. He is the second of four children of dad Alexander and mom Evangeline, a public school teacher.

Although he gets good grades in accounting subjects, he says he would have wanted to pursue Biology and become either a botanist or taxonomist, but his dad urged him to take up accountancy. His hobbies include collecting stamps, old coins and paper bills, and old issues of the National Geographic magazine.

He graduated valedictorian at the West Central Elementary School in Dingras and finished high school, salutatorian, at the Ilocos Norte National High School-Special Program for the Arts. At CBEA, he is associate editor of the Business Guilder.
