MMSU-URERB trains faculty, reviewers on ethical research practices
By Myrrha Prima Rosa Muli
To promote responsible and ethical research practices within the university, the MMSU Office for Research Ethics and the University Research Ethics Review Board (URERB) conducted a Training Workshop on Building Ethical Research Capacity on October 12-13, at the Center for Flexible Learning.
The training aimed to enhance the knowledge, understanding, and practical application of research ethics among participating research advisers and coordinators, in the conduct, mentoring, and review of academic and scientific studies, ensuring that ethical conduct remains essential to protecting human participants, maintaining data integrity, and upholding public trust in research findings.
The workshop also addressed the need to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Through dedicated training, research advisers and coordinators can better guide student and early-career researchers in observing ethical standards, particularly in informed consent, risk-benefit assessment, and the protection of the target populations.
Prof. Mari Elaine Lorica, chief of the Office for Research Ethics, expressed hope that the training would help foster a stronger culture of integrity and accountability within the university.
”With active participation, support, and cooperation, we can further strengthen our research ethics review process and ensure that all research endeavors uphold the highest standards of scientific rigor and ethical conduct,” she added.
The initiative aims to ensure that all researchers adhere to university research ethics standards and uphold integrity, accountability, and ethical responsibility in their academic work. By equipping researchers, advisers, coordinators, and reviewers with the necessary knowledge and skills, MMSU seeks to safeguard research participants, promote responsible research practices, and maintain public trust in the university’s scholarly endeavors.
