Advancing platforms that strengthen the rights of people with disabilities, the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) Department of Physical Therapy (PT) is set to participate in the observance of the week-long National Disability Rights Week 2026 from July 17-23.

This year’s celebration centers on the theme “Rights first, Legislation Forward — Strategic Action for Equal Participation and Inclusive Development”, which pushes for the active implementation of legislative frameworks to continuously build a more inclusive society.

As advocates of physical well-being, the department solidified its commitment to advancing equitable healthcare access and promoting the active participation of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of community life.

“As future and current professionals, we have a unique responsibility. We must advocate for accessible healthcare, promote inclusive rehabilitation services, and empower persons with disabilities to participate fully in education, employment, and community life,” remarked PT Department Chair Gerald Lester Caoili during the department's activity launch.

Throughout the week, the department is poised to engage in various activities and awareness campaigns designed to highlight the importance of accessibility, empowerment, and the protection of disability rights within the academic and local communities, including a Zumba Fitness Class every 4:30 in the afternoon from July 20-23, and a school-in-the-air activity about disability rights.

The department will also hold a protalk about Disability Rights among persons with disabilities (PWDs) in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte on July 23.

The National Disability Rights Week, initiated by the National Council on Disability Affairs, is an annual event that honors the contributions of persons with disabilities and calls for stronger institutional support to break down barriers to participation.
