MMSU environmental science students called attention to local environmental issues in Ilocos Norte during the Sustainability Talk held at the Center for Flexible Learning on April 16.
Two graduates from the College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD), now environmental professionals, discussed the pressing environmental challenges our province faces, including climate change.
Along with an instructor from the college, they proposed innovative solutions that show the importance of sustainability and community engagement in tackling these critical issues.
Drawing on her experience in environmental stewardship and climate mitigation, Ms. Justine Rose Teneza, Environmental Management Specialist and Protected Area Supervisor of the Tanap Watershed Forest Reserve, broadened the perspectives of the participants on biodiversity conservation in protected areas.
Meanwhile, Ms. Kyla Danea Naceno, Environmental Monitoring Officer of the Environmental Management Bureau of the Regional Office in the Solid Waste Management Section, guided the audience through effective waste management strategies in Ilocos Norte.
Engr. Ralph Lawrence Queddeng, an instructor at the university, concluded the session by presenting the potential of biopolymers in wastewater treatment, where he discussed the shift toward Green Chemistry and the development of Bioaerogels, a material used to soak up pollutants.
Through their gained experience and innovations, the speakers of the forum were able to have a productive discussion on sustainable approaches to environmental stewardship.
The talk, themed “Cultivating the North: Pioneering Actionable Paths to a Sustainable Future,” aimed to promote greener practices and collective action toward sustainability in the province. It was organized by the Sustainability and Futures Thinking Directorate, with assistance from the student-led organization MMSU Saringit in administering the program.
