Dr. Bhoomi Andharia, Principal Scientist at the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) – Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Bhavnagar, India, visited Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) on October 27 as part of her week-long engagement in the Ilocos Region.
The visit primarily aims to finalize the design of the one-hectare pilot saltern demonstration farm under ASIN Project 1. Dr. Andharia’s technical expertise will help ensure that the project’s designs are scientifically sound, socially responsive, and environmentally sustainable, aligning with the ASIN Program’s overarching goals.
Dr. Andharia’s courtesy call on MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr. marked the start of her week-long engagement in the Ilocos Region. Her itinerary includes visits to salt production areas in Ilocos Norte, La Union, and Pangasinan; a lecture at Pangasinan State University (PSU) on India’s saltern technologies; and a field visit to the pilot saltern farm site of MMSU’s Accelerating Salt Research and Innovation (ASIN) Center Project 1 in Bolinao, Pangasinan.
Her engagements stem from benchmarking initiatives carried out by ASIN Program staff and partner institutions, including the Department of Science and Technology–Region I (DOST-I), MMSU, PSU, Don Mariano Marcos State University, and the President Ramon Magsaysay State University.
ASIN Project 1, led by Dr. Nathaniel R. Alibuyog, MMSU Vice President for Research, Development, and Innovation, is one of four concurrent projects under the ASIN Program, spearheaded by PSU and funded by DOST. Meanwhile, CSMCRI–CSIR serves as India’s lead agency for salt research and development, based in the country’s major salt-producing province of Gujarat.
