Following a fruitful partnership with China, Professor Eugine D. Ramos, chief of the MMSU Nursery and Pomology, and Mr. Bryan S. Pungtilan, chief of the MMSU Crops Production, were chosen for the “Philippine Young Scientist Exchange Program” at Maize Research Institute of Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS), China, from April 22 to May 21, 2024.

The exchange program encompassed advanced breeding, high-yield cultivation techniques for corn and rice, and cutting-edge disease and pest control technology, including fall armyworm and garlic disease control technology.

Prof. Ramos and Mr. Pungtilan were warmly welcomed by Lee Xiandong, President of SAAS; Director Qi and Deputy Director Yanfang Xue of Maize Research Institute; and Deputy Director Liu of the International Relations Department.

During their stay, the two MMSU researchers learned various skills and knowledge on corn breeding and cultivation. Furthermore, they had the opportunity to communicate with multiple research institutes, such as the Plant Protection Research Institute, Vegetable Research Institute, and Wetland Agriculture and Ecology Research Institute.

In 2021, MMSU partnered with SAAS through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build the Agricultural Science and Technology Research and Development Center in Ilocos Norte. Both institutions also agreed to strengthen bilateral exchanges and visits.
