THE PAPER entitled "Development of an intelligent switch (i-switch) for general purpose switching" by fifth year electrical engineering students bagged the second place in the 2nd Electrical Engineering Research Design Contest held during the Institute of Electrical Engineers' 32nd Annual National Convention in Pasay City, Nov. 7-10.
Delegates to the convention as well as visitors and other viewers showed interest and flocked to MMSU’s booth where the simulated prototype model of the i-Switch was displayed. In fact, according to engineer Thomas Ubiña who accompanied the students to the competition, one visitor who thought the group from MMSU was an exhibitor from a multi-national company, wanted to "buy" the product. He also related that AVESCO, one of the largest suppliers of electrical and electronic devices in the country, is selling one with similar capability as the i-Switch’s at P150,000 per module. This gave the electrical engineering group an idea to patent the said device and commercialize it.
The university was one of the four higher education institutions in the country whose papers were qualified for oral presentation and final judging in the said national gathering. The three others were: Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP), Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), and Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT). PUP bagged the first place while MIT settled for third.
In the same competition last year, another group of electrical engineering students captured the first place with the paper "Design and development of a smart switch for general switching and lighting of small loads".
