Headway to becoming a premier university.

Mariano Marcos State University has been ranked 401st-600th in the whole world and second in the country in the 2022 THE (Times Higher Education) Impact Rankings. This is so far the highest rank any state university in the Philippines has ever attained in said ranking, one of the most prestigious HEI lists and the only global ranking that is based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Next to the Ateneo De Manila University which landed first in the country, and tied with the De La Salle University on the second spot, MMSU fared well in the assessment of universities against the UN-SDGs.

Assessment was based on the impact MMSU made in No Poverty (SDG1), Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG3), Quality Education (SDG4), Gender Equality (SDG5), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG7), Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG16), and Partnership for the Goals (SDG17).

The University is one of the only two higher education institutions in the country which delved with their grains in Poverty Alleviation (SDG1)

MMSU President Shirley C. Agrupis jubilated about the news and congratulated the whole university, especially the committee that spearheaded the application.

“Thank you so much for dreaming with me, and for achieving feats we dare pursue, armed with our collective desire to raise the MMSU banner higher, and in making a significant difference in the world,” she exclaimed.

For the overall ranking, only the universities that provided data on SDG 17, which is mandatory for all applicants, and at least three other SDGs were included. Final scores were the sum of their SDG 17 score and their other top three scores. This implies that the universities’ rankings were based on the set of SDGs they focus on. SDG 17 weighs 22 per cent of the overall score, while the other three costs 26 per cent each.

For MMSU, its overall impact ranking score is 66.9. Its score of 58.4 in SDG17 (Partnership for the Goals) is ranked 601st-800. Its highest scores were on Affordable and Clean Energy, 67.7 (rank 101-200); Gender Equality, 62.0 (rank 101-200); and, No Poverty, 56.9 (rank 201-300). MMSU were also ranked 401st-600th in Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (43.1) and Quality Education (51.1), while scoring 49.4 in Good Health and Well-being (601st-800th).

Data submitted by the university was collated from 2016 and 2020, as prescribed by THE. Pieces of evidence which are visible to the public were also required.

For his part, Commission on Higher Education Chair Prospero De Vera commended MMSU for its latest achievement. It can be remembered that, in the past, Dr. De Vera challenged MMSU to submit to THE rankings.

Other schools in the country that made it to the list are Central Luzon State University, Mapua University, University of Sto. Tomas, Tarlac Agricultural University which ranked 601-800; Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, San Beda University, and Visayas State University, ranking 801-1000; and, Visayas State University, University of Asia and the Pacific, Cebu Technological University, St. Paul University Philippines, and Tarlac State University at 1001+.

This year’s ranking included 1,406 universities from 106 different countries or regions. Leading the Impact ranking list is Western Sydney University in Australia. (HLY, StratCom)
