MANILA, Philippines – In a dazzling display of talent, three remarkable films by individuals associated with the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) – a student, a faculty member, and an alumnus – were showcased at two renowned film festivals hosted by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

Driven by a shared ambition to elevate and celebrate Ilocano culture, the films titled 'Arapaap' (Ambition), 'Baklaak' (I’m Gay), and 'Karkarma' (Spirit of the Living) were featured under the auspices of CCP. The film festivals primarily intend to spotlight regional filmmaking and echo the rich tapestry of Philippine regional histories.

Ryand Angelo Ugalde, a second-year BA communication student, directed 'Arapaap'. This poignant documentary delves into the life of a student navigating the challenges of working in a carnival during the COVID-19 pandemic. Produced by Sirib Creatives, this reached the finals in the documentary category of the CCP's 35th Gawad Alternatibo, a coveted title in the realm of independent Asian film competitions.

Joining the roster is 'Baklaak', the brainchild of teacher education alumnus John Gabriel Gantala. This powerful narrative follows a transgender individual delivering a soul-stirring monologue, shedding light on the profound adversities faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. Both 'Arapaap' and 'Baklaak' graced the screen of the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP Blackbox Theater) between August 5-6.

Meanwhile, 'Karkarma', directed by the Melver Ritz Gomez, an instructor at the College of Arts and Sciences, earned its place in the Next Gen section of Cinemalaya, a festival co-organized by the Cinemalaya Foundation Inc. and CCP. This film weaves a captivating narrative on the Ilocano legend of Paoay Lake. Its premiere took place at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on August 5.

MMSU President Shirley C. Agrupis lauded the selection of the three films at the distinguished film festivals, saying this is “a testament to the boundless creativity and unwavering commitment of our MMSU-trained young Ilokano filmmakers." She warmly expressed her support and extended heartfelt congratulations to the young filmmakers, who have previously showcased their work in prominent screenings and competitions both nationally and regionally.
