MMSU Teatro Normal's "Ang Unang Aswang" production has received outstanding reviews following its premiere on January 23 at Teatro Ilocandia. The play, an adaptation of Rody Vera's award-winning work, is directed by Dr. James G. Ventura III and delves into themes of revenge, cannibalism, and the blurred line between humanity and monstrosity.

The lead character, portrayed by Rochelle Ramos, a 2nd year Bachelor of Culture and Arts Education student, takes the audience on a harrowing journey of transformation into the first aswang, a legendary creature born from suffering and vengeance. Nathaniel Doropan, a 4th year Bachelor of Physical Education student, complements Ramos's performance with his portrayal of the lead role.

MMSU President Shirley C. Agrupis commended the production, stating, “The play brilliantly showcases the depth of talent we have at MMSU.” She congratulated Dr. Ventura and the entire cast for generously sharing their talents and making the entire community proud.
Strategic Communications director Herdy Yumul lavishly praised Teatro Normal for their “spectacular birthday gift to MMSU.” He also thanked everyone who saw the play, stressing that “support for Teatro Normal is support for the culture of excellence in MMSU. The play is a highlight of the monthlong celebration of the university’s 46th foundation anniversary.

“Ang Unang Aswang” also earned critical acclaim from Michael Esmino, managing editor of The Ilocos Times. “Legit university-based theater has indeed arrived in Ilocos Norte,” he said. Esmino commended the acting prowess of the group, matched with an elaborate set.
University constituents and guests who have watched the play expressed delight with the theater experience. “Our minds were tickled, and our hearts touched,” Aaron Zander Guillermo, a communications student, remarked.

The play, a collaborative effort involving the University Student Council, College of Teacher Education, Center for Human Movement Studies, and the MMSU Association of Culture, Arts, Sports, and Health Advocates, will be shown until January 27.

Tickets are sold for only fifty pesos for MMSU constituents and one hundred pesos for guests.

Last year, Teatro Normal presented “Ang Lagusan,” an original screenplay by Ventura. It was also well-received by viewers and critics.
