The winning tradition continues.
For the sixth time in a row, the university bagged the overall championship in the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association-Region I (SCUAA-I) Athletic Meet held Feb. 2-6 at the University of Northern Philippines, Vigan City.
Garnering 349 points from all of the annual event’s 14 sports disciplines, Team MMSU grabbed the top spot with a convincing 43.5-point margin over its nearest competitor University of Northern Philippines which gathered 305.5 points. Pangasinan State University placed third with 252 points while the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University and the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College ranked fourth and fifth with 227 and 95.5 points, respectively.
In the women’s division, MMSU won the championship in athletics, swimming, volleyball, lawn tennis, billiards, and chess. Top spots in baseball and badminton were clinched by the university in the men’s division. The Green and Gold also placed first runner up in men’s athletics, swimming, basketball, chess, sepak takraw, and in women’s badminton; second runner-up in women’s basketball and in men’s volleyball, taekwondo, table tennis, billiards, and soccer; and third runner-up in men’s lawn tennis and in women’s taekwondo, table tennis, and sepak takraw.
Prof. Arsenio Gallego, director of the Physical Education, Sports, and Socio-cultural Development Office (PESDO), attributes the six-peat victory to the unity and teamwork shown by all the athletes, coaches, trainors, and team managers. “The university’s unwavering commitment and support to sports development allowed us to reaffirm our continued dominance in SCUAA-I,†adds Director Gallego.
In 2007, the university received the Hall of Fame Award for bagging the championship for four consecutive years, a first in league history.
Next year, MMSU will be home to the SCUAA-I Meet, an event the university hosted in 2006.
