Languages department sponsors echo seminar

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES – Various topics from seminars attended by faculty members of the Department of Languages and Literature (DLL) were presented June 28 in an echo seminar held at the Multi-Media Center here. This was attended by department faculty members and senior AB English Studies students.

Dr. Marlina L. Lino, DLL chairperson, said the activity was an opportunity for the faculty members to share the insights and lessons they acquired from the seminars and conferences they attended. She added that through this sharing of knowledge, other faculty members would be motivated to enhance their instruction techniques and capabilities for a more effective language teaching that would lead to a more efficient language learning for the students.

Ms. Alma A. Sierra spoke on the topic “Gurong Giliw: Teknik, Tanong, Tanaw sa Wika at Panitikan ng mga Pilipinong Guro”. Her discussion pegged on the innovativeness of teachers, mentioning strategies for language teaching such as the use of pick-up lines and “flip-top” (conversation in rap). Sierra attended the Pambansang Seminar Workshop ng SANGFIL at the University of the Philippines in Diliman on Sept. 28-30, 2011.

Moreover, Dr. Francisca S. Nicolas shared “Idiay Tengnga: Ang Mga Bata Bilang Sentro ng Pagtuturo” from the seminar “Idiay Tengnga: The Learner Centered Language in Focus” which she attended on Oct. 15, 2011 at the Cultural Auditorium of St. Louis University in Baguio City.

Furthermore, Mr. Mee Jay A. Domingo discussed the “Adept Principles” which revolved on: 1) the importance of making students understand why they need to learn something that is of immediate value (creating the need); 2) the value of involving them in the formulation of their objectives in learning (state objectives); 3) the significance of listening to what they have to “say” (two-way feedback); 4) the importance of learning experientially (engaging the students in activities); and 5) the impact of letting them evaluate if they were able to achieve the objectives they formed (generalize take-aways). He was one of the seven faculty members of the department who attended the T3 Training (Train-Teacher-Training) at the Jose Rizal University on Oct. 18-28, 2011.

The DLL chair encouraged other faculty members to enthusiastically join seminars, workshops, and conferences aligned to their respective specializations for them to acquire broader knowledge and enhance their skills. She commended the efforts of the echo seminar’s program committee headed by Ms. Eufe Madariaga.
