ROLYSON Simpliciano, a biology graduate, has been chosen as one of four Bayer Young Environmental Envoys (BYEE) for 2008. He ranked second among four finalists in the national competition aimed at educating selected young Filipino leaders on the global and local efforts on environmental protection and sustainable development.

The four finalists who will join their counterparts from 12 countries in the Asia-Pacific Region for a weeklong all-expense-paid study tour to Germany on Nov. 1-8 were named in ceremonies held Sept. 25 at the Garden Ballroom of the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City. President Miriam E. Pascua and Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis attended the said ceremony.

The three other finalists came from the De La Salle University-Manila (first), West Visayas State University (third), and University of Bohol (fourth). They were selected from among 150 aspirants from different state colleges and universities in the country.

Earlier, Simpliciano was chosen as one of 12 BYEEs who attended a live-in Eco-camp on Sept. 20-24 in Talisay City, Batangas.  The eco-camp provided the envoys with opportunity to gain better understanding of sustainable development and the critical environmental issues facing them today.
As envoy, he was required by Bayer Philippines and its partner, United Nations Environment Programme, to implement his project on the integrated use of lignocellulosic for mushroom and biopulp production. His winning proposal, which was his undergraduate thesis, is to duplicate the technology for mushroom and handmade paper making in collaboration with the Sangguniang Kabataan of San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte. His thesis adviser was Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis who later assisted him in his project.

He presented results and outputs of his research  on “Empowering youth leaders through the integrated utilization of banana stalks, waste bamboo scraps, and rice straws for mushroom and biopulp production” before a panel of jurors at the final judging on Sept. 25 at the EDSA-Shangri-La Hotel. The judging was capped by the Awards Presentation Night held at the Grand Ballroom of the said hotel on the same date.
