The MMSU College of Medicine (COM) held its 9th Clinical Graduation and White Coat Ceremony at Teatro Ilocandia on June 13.
A total of 26 graduates from Batch Namnama were recognized for their achievements and donned their white coats as they begin their one-year postgraduate internship at various hospitals across the country, a requirement before taking the Physician Licensure Examination.
MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr. graced the event. He was joined by Vice President for Academic Affairs Aris Reynold Cajigal, COM Dean Dr. James Patrick Peralta, Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH-MC) Chief of Medical Professional Staff Dr. Jose Orosa III, COM faculty, other university officials, and parents.
Dr. Policarpio Joves, Jr., former Dean of the MMSU College of Medicine and current examiner of the Board of Medicine of the Professional Regulation Commission, served as the Guest of Honor and Speaker.
In his message, Dr. Joves urged the graduates not only to uphold excellence during their internships but also to become instruments in bridging the gap between healthcare and the people they will serve.
“Today, as you receive your white coats and prepare for your internship, I challenge you not only to become excellent clinicians but also champions of primary healthcare, advocates of social accountability, and builders of a more equitable healthcare system,” Dr. Joves said.
Meanwhile, delivering the Clinical Recognition Remarks on behalf of MMMH-MC Medical Center Chief Dr. Maria Lourdes Otayza, Dr. Orosa reminded the graduates that their white gowns are not only a symbol of achievement but also of responsibility.
“Ang puting gown na inyong isusuot ay hindi lamang isang kasuotan; ito ay isang sagisag ng tiwala. Ito ay tanda ng pagpasok sa isang propesyong nakaugat sa paghilom, paglilingkod, pagiging lihim sa dapat ilihim, kababang-loob, at pananagutang moral,” Dr. Orosa said.
[The white gown that you will wear is not merely a piece of clothing; it is a symbol of trust. It is a sign of entering a profession rooted in healing, service, confidentiality, humility, and moral accountability.]
For his part, Dr. Manzano emphasized the importance of applying the university's WISER (Wisdom, Innovation, Stewardship, Excellence, and Resilience) values in their future medical profession. He also advised them to develop both emotional and physical strength to overcome the challenges of medical education.
Meanwhile, MMSU COM Clerk's Coordinator Dr. Gretchen Ranada encouraged the graduates to wear their white coats with integrity, professionalism, curiosity, compassion, and humility.
The post-graduate interns will complete their training at hospitals across the country, including MMMH-MC, the Philippine General Hospital, Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center, Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Bulacan Medical Center, and Asian Hospital and Medical Center.
