To promote climate resilience in the region, Dr. Julius Jimenez, an agriculture instructor at MMSU, shared flood risk assessment tools during an international seminar held on April 27 at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia.
In the seminar “Local Adaptation Planning Tools for Urban Flood Resilience,” Dr. Jimenez, a Geographic Information System expert, presented tools such as FloodS and ClimoCast. He discussed their applications in local-scale flood risk assessment, climate projection, early warning, and decision support for adaptation planning.
The event was organized by the Asian Institute of Technology-Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (AIT RRC.AP) in collaboration with Japan’s Ministry of the Environment and USU. It was attended by policymakers, researchers, and practitioners working on climate adaptation across the Asia-Pacific region.
In his message, Dr. Jimenez thanked AIT RRC.AP for inviting him as a speaker at the seminar. He also expressed hope for continued collaboration in the future.
“It was a meaningful and productive engagement representing MMSU in an AIT RRC.AP-led event. I hope that we can continue working together in the future, especially in promoting geospatial and data-driven approaches for climate resilience,” Dr. Jimenez said.
Meanwhile, College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development Dean Charlie Batin commended faculty member Dr. Jimenez for his efforts to promote climate resilience through the use of innovative technologies. He also affirmed the college’s commitment to global collaboration.
“Our participation in the global discourse through Dr. Jimenez echoes our genuine concern for environmental issues and our strong resolve to promote climate resilience in our communities,” Dr. Batin shared.
The Dean added that MMSU will continue to partner with universities around the world in pursuit of sustainable development.
