Students of the MMSU Laboratory High School Batac showcased diverse cultures from around the world through performing and visual arts during their MAPEH culminating activity “Dayaw 4.0: Alimpatok ni Tallugading,” held at the Student Center on May 11.
In its fourth year, the event featured an art exhibit displaying students’ art outputs accumulated throughout the school year, alongside performances inspired by various global and local cultures.
The students performed various pop genres from Korea and America, as well as local folk dances such as La Jota Moncadena and traditional Chinese dances such as the Lantern dance.
One of the major highlights of the event was the original play performed by the Grade 10 students. Titled “Empanada,” the play portrayed Ilocano culture and heritage through a storyline centered on the delicacy.
The event also included performances such as contemporary dances, vocal presentations, and culturally inspired productions that reflected the students’ creativity and appreciation for cultures around the world.
Founder and Program Director of the Katutubo Exchange Philippines, Edwin Antonio, graced the event with his presence. He is a prominent cultural advocate and researcher who is widely recognized for his lecture-workshops on Philippine indigenous heritage.
In his speech, Dr. Antonio encouraged the students to value and preserve Filipino culture and heritage through art, emphasizing that art exists in every aspect of life.
“Art is in everything. It is a part of our identity. It makes us who we are.” Dr. Antonio said.
Quoting Carlos P. Romulo, he reminded the audience of the importance of protecting Filipino identity and culture, urging students to take pride in who they are and in the heritage they represent through their artistry.
Through “Dayaw,” MMSU-LHS provided students with an avenue to celebrate cultural diversity and showcase their artistic talents while strengthening pride in Filipino heritage.
