Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) earned commendation from the National Archive of the Philippines (NAP) for its consistent compliance with the agency’s records disposal procedures during a courtesy call at the Office of the President on April 21.
MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr., represented by Vice President for Administration and Finance Fides Bernardo Bitanga, welcomed Senior Records Management Analyst Christine Licopit during their visit.
Dr. Bitanga expressed his gratitude to NAP for its support and guidance during the records disposal activity of the university.
Meanwhile, Ms. Licopit also thanked the university for its yearly disposal of valueless records. Furthermore, she expressed her appreciation towards MMSU for its consistent compliance with records disposal guidelines and commitment to efficient records management.
MMSU disposed of 1,890 kilograms of valueless records that had already reached their prescribed retention periods under the Records Disposition Schedule (RDS) of NAP.
The records disposal was conducted in accordance with Republic Act No. 9470, or the National Archives of the Philippines Act of 2007, which authorizes government agencies to properly dispose of public records that are no longer needed after their retention period.
According to the Records and Archives Management Office Chief Rebecca Rangcapan, MMSU has consistently implemented its records disposal program since 2022, earning recognition from NAP for adhering to the proper procedures and guidelines.
Rangcapan added that the initiative reflects the university’s continuing efforts to promote sustainability by reducing paper waste and freeing storage space in offices.
“We strictly comply with the guidelines of NAP, and we ensure that the retention period prescribed by the RDS is followed,” she said.
The disposal activity also supports the “E” or Effective and Efficient Resource Generation and Management component of the SUCCEED Agenda of Dr. Manzano, as the disposed records are converted into recyclable materials.
The NAP Act of 2007 aims to establish an efficient records management system in government offices through the proper administration and disposition of public records.
