Engr. Thomas Ubiña, Chief of the MMSU National Bioenergy Research and Innovation Center (NBERIC), served as discussant on the topic “Pathways to a Net-Zero Emission Strategy for the Philippines” at the plenary session of the 2026 Luzon Regional Scientific Meeting, held from April 7 to 8 in Muntinlupa City.

The event was organized by the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL), in partnership with the DOST Luzon Cluster, led by DOST National Capital Region.

During the session, Engr. Ubiña discussed the current state of greenhouse gas emissions in the country. He also provided science-based solutions to achieve a low-carbon future, which are part of NBERIC's renewable energy initiatives. He believed that these strategies would help ensure sustainable development for the Philippines.

“Through these scientific solutions, we would be able to minimize our country’s greenhouse gas emissions and help us align with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals,” Engr. Ubiña said.

Meanwhile, Dr. James Paul Madigal, NBERIC Director, extended his sincere gratitude to NAST PHL for recognizing NBERIC's contributions to the country’s renewable energy initiatives. He also assured them that the center will continue to cooperate with future scientific meetings.

“We would like to thank the NAST PHL for acknowledging NBERIC’s contributions to the development of the country’s renewable energy sector. We are committed to continuing our partnership with you to advance the country’s sustainability efforts,” Dr. Madigal said.

With the theme “UN SDGs: Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development,” the event gathered leading scientists, researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, and key stakeholders to assess Luzon’s progress toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
