Ateneo University Press shares publishing practices with MMSU Press
By Wimbledon Bosque
As it works to enhance a fully operational and institutionally recognized publication arm, the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) Press conducted a benchmarking visit to the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Press on December 4 to gain insights into its industry-standard practices in editorial management and book production.
The MMSU delegation was headed by University Press Chief Jareason Fabre, together with Anthony Joseph Duyao, Wimbledon Bosque, Jackson Tangonan, Jeffrey Ronduen, and Kenneth Tapac. The team was welcomed by Camille Veronica Abaya, Marketing Head, and Maxine Pascual, Textbook Head of ADMU Press.
During the visit, both teams engaged in discussions on organizational workflow, editorial and peer-review policies, and the end-to-end publishing cycle. The dialogue also covered the production timelines, quality control protocols, online visibility through establishing a publishing website and online book-sales platform, and the strategic approaches ADMU Press employs in distribution, marketing, and catalog development.
Since the MMSU University Press was operationalized this year, it has already been registered with the National Book Development Board (NBDB), the government agency that supports and regulates book publishing in the Philippines, and has produced 16 book titles, many of which are now being used across the university. Building on this momentum, the Press aims to expand into more genres, strengthen its online selling and digital visibility, and invite more authors from MMSU and partner institutions.
MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr., emphasized during the 2nd MMSU Press Book Launch his aspiration to build a robust publication structure that could eventually support the establishment of the University’s own bookstore. He encouraged the Press, operating under the Office for Strategic Communication led by Prof. Herdy Yumul, to benchmark best practices from reputable universities as a foundation for building a strong and sustainable university press.
The benchmarking activity is expected to help strengthen the MMSU Press by applying the practices learned in editorial processes, peer-review systems, content acquisition, and production workflows from recognized scholarly publishing standards.
