Reaching new heights as a sustainable institution, Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) climbed to the 200th spot in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025, maintaining its rank as first among Philippine State Universities and Colleges (SUCs). The university also ranks second among higher education institutions (HEIs), following the official announcement today, December 5.
MMSU’s improved standing, from being 231st in 2024 and 251st in 2023, reflects its efforts in green campus development, energy conservation, waste reduction, and sustainability-oriented education and research.
In the 2025 evaluation, the university earned notable placements in several key indicators: scoring 1825 in Energy and Climate Change, placing 1st nationwide; 1550 in Transportation, placing 3rd; 1587.5 in Education and Research, placing 4th; and 1275 in Setting and Infrastructure, placing 4th.
The university’s upward movement demonstrates its sustained efforts to integrate environmental stewardship across campus operations, academic programs, and research activities.
MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr. expressed, “MMSU’s rise in the UI GreenMetric Rankings shows that our commitment to sustainability is not just a goal, but a practice embedded in every part of our campus, from operations to research to teaching.” With this, he pledged to continue leading by example for a greener and more resilient 2026.
Now in its 15th edition, the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings continues to serve as the premier global ranking system for measuring universities’ sustainability performance, assessing 1,745 institutions from 105 countries under the theme, “Advancing Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education: Stories from Our Institutions and Communities.”
UI GreenMetric emphasizes that the rankings aim to encourage universities to intensify their involvement in sustainability initiatives through institutional improvements and community-wide engagement.
MMSU first joined the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings in 2022, an initiative led by then University President and now Commission on Higher Education Chairperson Shirley C. Agrupis. Since then, the university has steadily strengthened its sustainability practices, earning recognition both nationally and globally, and reaffirming its commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
