The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) kicked off the 2025 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) on November 18 at Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena, with Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) serving as one of its official partner institutions. This marks the start of a four-day showcase of the nation’s scientific and technological innovations.
Anchored on the theme “Building Smart and Sustainable Communities,” this year’s NSTW is drawing guests, stakeholders, students, and members of the science community from the participating institutions and partner sectors nationwide.
MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano Jr., together with Vice President for Research, Development, and Innovation Nathaniel Alibuyog, faculty members and students, joined the opening program, highlighting the university’s full commitment to supporting DOST’s initiatives. This follows the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between MMSU and DOST-I last September, which established the framework for their collaboration during the 2025 NSTW celebration.
To further solidify their partnership, MMSU mobilized its faculty, staff, and students to assist in major NSTW activities, providing ushers, ROTC marshals, cultural performers, transportation for VIPs, and venues for Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)-coordinated events.
Running until November 21, the celebration features science, technology, and innovation forums; technology exhibits; product and technology pitching sessions; business-to-business matching; and various science competitions, among others. These activities aim to showcase the country’s growing S&T capabilities and strengthen public appreciation of innovation.
In his speech, DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. underscored the principle of "co-creation", stating, "Local fisher folks and farmers are not just our beneficiaries but they are co-creators," reminding the participants to involve local communities in realizing solutions to their inherent problems.
He added that this year’s NSTW project, which focuses on affordable, nutritious solutions, reflects DOST’s mission to improve the quality of Filipino life through every exhibit, demonstration, and innovation.
Moreover, Dr. Manzano emphasized that the partnership between MMSU and DOST forwards both institutions’ shared commitment in promoting science and technology through joint efforts in event promotion, stakeholder engagement, manpower mobilization, and logistical support. He assured the university’s continued support to the initiatives of the organization.
The four-day event reinforces DOST’s commitment to delivering science-based, innovative, and inclusive solutions under its four strategic pillars: human well-being, wealth creation, wealth protection, and sustainability. These pillars reflect the Department’s core advocacy, OneDOST4U: Solutions, Opportunities for All. This initiative also underscores MMSU's proactive commitment to serving as a key partner in realizing these forward-looking national goals.
Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 780, series of 2019, which designates the fourth week of November as National Science and Technology Week, DOST, through its attached agencies and regional offices, leads nationwide efforts to elevate innovation discourse, encourage collaboration among sectors, and connect the public with opportunities in research, technology application, and enterprise development.
